Genre analysis: language practice 3

time to complete: 30 minutes

Up to this point, you have practiced thinking about the genre of texts and their defining features, making predictions and then checking the answers for confirmation.

To help you apply this developing skill in your own study, the example below from Engineering asks you to consider certain questions without providing you with the answers.

Often, you will need to think about these questions without having confirmation, so this is a good opportunity to practice that skill. As you read, think about:

  1. What aspects of the organization and/or language of the text tells us that this is from the field of Engineering?
  2. Do you think this text is aimed at a professional, academic or commercial audience? Why?
  3. Do you know the name of the genre? Have you seen any other similar texts?
